When Lori Schupbach worked as a flight attendant, it irritated her to have to carry three pairs of shoes: high heels for a professional look, flats for working in airplanes and casual shoes for off-duty.
And when she visited big cities like New York and Chicago, she noticed women in dresses wearing athletic shoes as they raced to catch public transit.
Why, she wondered, couldn’t someone create a shoe with interchangeable heels. And so Schupbach took the leap and invented one. After a process that took about two and a half years, she was issued patent 7,185,448 on March 6.

Her invention is a shoe that not only has interchangeable heels but a “blade” connected to each heel that alters the shoe’s arch. High heels have higher arches than flat shoes.
Schupbach said she wants to sell the patent and collect royalties. And she wants her invention to end up in a quality shoe that would sell in the $130 to $160 range.
Her patent attorney, Dale J. Ream, said people have invented shoes before with interchangeable heels but Schupbach’s invention is unusual because it replaces the heel and adjusts the arch.
